How to Extract Subtitles from MKV Files

I downloaded a very rare movie from the Internet but it turned out to be that there was a hardcoded subtitle which was in French. Can I extract the French subtitle out so that I could insert a new one? It’s no good that I have two subtitles running on the screen. The video is in MKV file by the way.

MKV or Matroska Video Files is a very popular format for movies, TV shows, web series, concerts and more. They can be easily downloaded in the Internet and most often, MKV videos contain hardcoded subtitles. Unlike other clips with a separate .srt file, hardcoded ones have a subtitle incorporated into the video. You cannot delete or remove them but luckily you can edit them by using MKV subtitle extractor.

Despite the requirement as mentioned in the beginning, there’re also many reasons why one needs to mine out subtitles from MKV videos. There are those who want to replace them with more appropriate subs with good translation and synchronization. But majority wants to extract subtitles for later language replacement. Just like the example above, if you found a video with a mismatching subtitle, or those not translated in your language, the only way you could get this subtitle out from MKV is to use standalone programs meant for this purpose.

Part 2: Add Subtitles to MKV and Convert It to Any Format

Part 1: Use MKVExtractGUI-2 to extract subtitles from MKV

MKVExtractGUI-2 is an open-source project released by SourceForge.net in March of 2010. It allows extraction of subtitles from MKV videos by using mkvtoolnix. Moreover, you can use this tool to extract chapters, audios and specific scenes into a separate file out from the original clip. The MKVExtractGUI-2 is compatible with both Windows Vista and Windows 7 while it yields a very small footprint of just 719.2 KB. Using the program is fairly simple, see the steps below:

  1. You need to install MKVToolNix first on your computer.
  2. Download the MKVExtractGUI-2 and unzip the files.
  3. Note: MKVToolNix is a platform on which you can run series of MKV tools including MKVExtractGUI.

  4. Locate the MKVToolNix installation folder which is usually in the C:/Program Files of your hard drive.
  5. Copy the MKVExtractGUI-2.exe and paste it inside the MKVToolNix folder.
  6. Launch the MKVExtractGUI-2.exe by double clicking it.
  7. install MKVExtractGUI-2

  8. Select the input file and this is where the desired MKV video should go (as illustrated in the above image).
  9. Choose the output directory which is the path where the extracted files will be saved.
  10. Select the subtitle you want to extract from the video by ticking the box next to it. Subtitles are usually placed after video and audio in the same list (see the image below).
  11. Click the “Extract” button and it will easily extract subs from MKV.
  12. select Subtitle track with MKVExtractGUI-2

  13. Check the output directory and the subs should be saved as ASS, SUB or SRT.

Both the MKVToolNix and MKVExtractGUI-2 are available freely so you need not to spend even a single cent just to use it. You can download them on SourceForge.net or search them on the Internet picking the most reliable and trusted provider. How to extract subtitles from MKV files is very easy with these tools, but editing and hardcoding them again into the video is yet another story.
